Our popular Torchlight Tours see the entire Gallery buzzing with activity and are held the first Saturday of every school holidays except summer (at that time of year the daylight hours are too long for torchlight!) Arrive at 6pm for a fun-filled evening of art, entertainment, snacks, and tours of the gallery by torchlight. The main lights of the first floor spaces are turned off, and participants take their torches in small groups around the exhibition, hosted by our Gallery Guides.
Meanwhile downstairs, children and their families can engage in additional entertainment such as musical or theatrical performers, enjoy a light snack or create a mini work of art. All accompanying adults and babies are free of charge. A fun family night not to be missed!
Torchlight Tour Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drop off my child at this event, or am I required to stay?
All children must be accompanied by an adult, as a condition of entry. It is ok to have more than one child with you, but please use your judgement when deciding how many children you can safely manage solo. Remember - accompanying adults are free! Why not bring the grandparents and make it a family night out!
Can I book my 4 year old child into the Torchlight Tour?
When we are thinking up a new idea for a Torchlight Tour, we base it on what an 8 or 9 year old could reasonably do, and then we make sure the activity can be easily simplified or made more complex depending on the age of the participants. If you are confident your four year old would enjoy the experience, then this is fine, remembering you are required to stay and provide supervision and support for the child for the entirety of the tour.
My child just started high school, is this event suitable?
Any child of any age interested in attending are of course very welcome, however every child entering must be accompanied by an adult, we cannot accept children without an adult to accompany them.
Do I need to supply any materials for my child to participate in the Torchlight Tour?
All materials are supplied, the most important thing to bring along is a torch, but we usually have some spares in case you forget. Occasionally our tours are themed based on the focus exhibition and we encourage children to dress up; however, you will be made aware of this through our promotion of the event and upon booking.
Can my child participate in the tours if they have specific needs?
Absolutely, all of the Gallery's programs are inclusive and accessible. We want to work closely with parents and caregivers to make it the best possible experience for the child, so it’s a good idea to call us to book so we can talk about your child's individual needs. If your child works with any support agencies or is a part of a special class at school - please also let their carers know about our FREE Community Access Workshops, where we develop and present art making workshops for individual groups with their specific needs in mind. We have more information on our access and facilities on our website
Do I need to book my child in advance or can I just show up on the night?
Bookings are required in advance. Our Torchlight Tours can book out very fast; to ensure you secure a place contact us as soon as you can, but it is also possible to take bookings on the day or the day before. Please note, your booking is not confirmed until payment has been made.
Is my place secured if I book via email?
If you are booking via email please note that it does not automatically secure your place - also, please be aware the email account is monitored during office hours Monday to Friday. You will receive an email from our Gallery staff confirming your booking and directing you to make payment. If you are unsure about your booking, we encourage you to call our friendly staff.
Do I need to pack food and drinks for my child?
Torchlight Tours are catered events. To be as inclusive as possible, we try our best to plan for children who may have dietary requirements based on the information given to us upon booking; however, if your child does have specific requirements that the Gallery cannot meet, you are more than welcome to bring along your own snacks.
Can I get a refund if I can't make it on the day?
We will happily provide a refund if notified with 48 hours' notice or more. During the 48 hours prior to your booked event- we can reschedule your child's booking one of our school holiday workshops in that holiday period (if there are places available). We strive to keep the children's events affordable for families, please be aware that last minute cancellations and refunds cannot be accommodated.
Will there be photos taken during the Torchlight Tour?
We do generally have a photographer capturing all of the excitement during our events. You will be asked upon booking if you give permission for your child to be photographed. If you do not approve photography, we will make sure no photos of your child are taken on the day. These photographs will often be used on our website or in a flyer to promote future workshops - but if you prefer your child not to be photographed that can be easily accommodated.
