Expansion Updates

Newcastle Art Gallery's expansion is set to begin following a $10 million grant from the Commonwealth and NSW Governments announced in Newcastle by Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and NSW Deputy Premier Paul Toole.

The funding will add to the $16.5 million already committed by the City of Newcastle and $10 million bequeathed by the late Val Ryan. City of Newcastle will partner with the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation and the community to raise the remaining funding as the expansion works commence.

Newcastle Art Gallery has been at the heart of our city’s rich arts and cultural history for over forty years. Now, the story of its future is set to begin.

The expansion project will deliver an additional 1,600 square meters of exhibition space to showcase our City's collection and our artists’ most groundbreaking ideas.

The project will also deliver a new café and retail shop, multi-purpose and educational program spaces, a secure international standard loading dock, and will extend the building's footprint east along Darby Street and Queen Street.

The reimagined Gallery set to launch a new era of cultural tourism that will consolidate the Hunter's reputation as an active and vibrant centre for the arts in NSW.

Nationally recognised as one of the finest public collections in Australia, Newcastle Art Gallery is the custodian of over 7,000 works of art valued at $115M. It is a significant and diverse permanent collection, that provides a time capsule of Australian art from the colonial era to contemporary works of today.

As a major cultural asset for NSW, Newcastle Art Gallery offers the ability to both tell local stories and inspire new ones through the creation, collection and display of works of art that hold local, national and international importance.
